South Africa, Pretoria: The IA substation in Soshanguve is undergoing critical repairs as technicians replace ageing infrastructure to improve power supply stability. The maintenance, which includes upgrading switchgears and cables, is part of a broader effort to modernize the electricity network and prevent future outages.

The IA substation has been in operation for over 50 years, and its outdated infrastructure has contributed to frequent power failures and struggles to meet growing energy demands. The current upgrades, now 85 % complete, are expected to bring significant relief by improving efficiency and reducing the need for load reductions.

Planned power interruptions are scheduled between 08:00 and 17:00, affecting multiple blocks over two days. On 27 March, residents in Blocks BB and DD, along with the Soshanguve SPS line (Tswaing), are impacted. The maintenance will extend to Blocks FF, GG, NN, IA, HH, LL, LL Ext, PP, and GG, as well as parts of Winterveldt.

Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo assured residents that these disruptions are necessary for long-term improvements. The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality has advised residents to treat all electrical outlets as live during the shutdown and plan accordingly.

Tshwane Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya, emphasized that this project is a crucial step in resolving long-standing electricity challenges. “These upgrades will ensure a more reliable power supply for Soshanguve residents,” Moya stated, highlighting the town’s commitment to infrastructure development.
