Ausgrid, the largest electricity distributor on Australia’s east coast, has taken a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint by partnering with Schneider Electric. The collaboration aims to introduce SF6-free Distribution Switchgear into the Ausgrid Distribution Network, a crucial step towards achieving Ausgrid’s environmental goals.
SF6, a gas used in Ring Main Units (RMUs) since the 1980s, has superior dielectric properties but poses a substantial environmental risk if leaked, being 23,500 times more potent than CO2. Schneider Electric’s Pure Air SF6-free switchgear offers a sustainable solution, demonstrating the company’s commitment to providing environmentally friendly solutions.
Ausgrid’s Head of Design & Engineering Services, Brett Hawkeswood, expressed his delight in partnering with Schneider Electric, stating that the collaboration not only reduces reliance on SF6 gas but also strengthens safety features on the network.
The new kiosk features automation capabilities with Schneider’s T300 technology, allowing remote switching commands from the control room. It also integrates seamlessly with Ausgrid’s Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) provided by Schneider Electric, ensuring optimal grid reliability.
This partnership marks a significant step towards decarbonizing Ausgrid’s grid operations and achieving its environmental goals. By introducing SF6-free Distribution Switchgear, Ausgrid is reducing its reliance on environmentally harmful gases and promoting a more sustainable future.
