SSEN Transmission, a subsidiary of energy giant SSE, has unveiled an ambitious £22 billion investment plan aimed at transforming the UK’s power infrastructure over the next five years. This substantial commitment, spanning from April 2025 to March 2031, is designed to propel the nation towards its clean energy targets whilst bolstering energy security.

The Investment Breakdown

The plan’s cornerstone is a £16 billion allocation for ‘strategic investments’, already greenlit by energy regulator Ofgem. These funds will be directed towards enhancing the UK’s transmission network, a critical component in the country’s energy distribution system. SSEN Transmission has also outlined the potential for an additional £9.4 billion investment, which could elevate the total spending to a staggering £31.7 billion.

Environmental and Economic Impact

This massive investment is closely aligned with the UK government’s clean energy target, which aims to source at least 95% of electricity from low-carbon sources by 2030. The initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in the nation’s journey towards net-zero emissions.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the investment promises significant economic advantages. If the full £31.7 billion is realised, it could support up to 37,000 jobs across the UK, with 17,500 in Scotland and 8,400 in the north of Scotland. The plan is projected to inject £15 billion into the UK economy, with Scotland receiving £7 billion of this sum.

Challenges and Conditions

SSEN Transmission emphasises that the success of this ambitious plan hinges on establishing a robust financial framework. This framework must be capable of attracting the unprecedented levels of investment required to facilitate the clean energy transition while safeguarding future energy consumers.

Rob McDonald, Managing Director of SSEN Transmission, describes the plan as a “deliverable blueprint” to unlock the investment needed to achieve UK and Scottish net-zero and energy security targets. He highlights the potential for this investment to turbocharge the economy and leave a transformational legacy for communities, the economy, and nature.
