UK: The UK government has granted a development consent order for the Rampion 2 offshore wind farm off the southern coast of England, signaling a major step in expanding renewable energy capacity. This new extension of the existing Rampion wind farm, located offshore near Sussex, is set to contribute significantly to the country’s clean energy goals.
Led by RWE in partnership with a Macquarie-led consortium and a subsidiary of Enbridge, the Rampion 2 project aims to install up to 90 offshore wind turbines. These turbines will be supported by subsea cables that transmit the generated electricity to the shore beneath Climping Beach. From there, power will be delivered to a new substation at Oakendene, near Cowfold, which will then feed it into the transmission network at Bolney, in mid-Sussex.
The new substation will play a crucial role in enhancing energy distribution, ensuring that the generated electricity from the offshore wind farm can efficiently enter the grid, meeting rising energy demands. If financial investment decisions proceed as planned, Rampion 2 is expected to begin construction and deliver first power by the end of this decade. The project will also be eligible for the future Contract for Difference auction, further strengthening the UK’s renewable energy capacity.
This new substation and the project as a whole will help improve power transmission and support the UK’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.
