As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida’s west coast, Tampa Electric is gearing up for a massive response effort to restore power to its customers. The company has mobilized over 5,000 utility workers from as far away as Texas and Minnesota to assist in assessing damage and restoring power once the storm passes. This marks the largest deployment in Tampa Electric’s history.

Tampa Electric anticipates widespread and prolonged outages throughout its service territory due to the forecasted intensity of Milton at landfall and the risk of a catastrophic storm surge. Residents are urged to prepare and consider backup power arrangements, especially those who rely on electricity for health needs.

Crews have been strategically positioned just outside the storm’s projected path, ready to commence work as soon as it is safe. While Tampa Electric prepares year-round for extreme weather, the magnitude of Hurricane Milton is unprecedented and will cause extensive tree damage, which will impact overhead power lines.

The company and its crews are committed to working around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. “Hurricane Milton is expected to cause significant destruction across the region, leading to a longer restoration process than we’ve experienced in the past,” said Archie Collins, president and chief executive officer of Tampa Electric. “We urge our customers to prioritize their safety. We will get through this together, but it will require patience, teamwork, and determination.”

Tampa Electric has also set up a flood barrier wall around its Big Bend power plant in Apollo Beach, which can handle 15 feet of storm surge. The company has also prepared its resources, including equipment and personnel, to respond to the storm’s impact.

In addition to Tampa Electric’s efforts, Governor DeSantis has activated 8,000 National Guard members to assist in rescue missions and address power outages. Nearly 40,000 electrical line repairmen are also in Florida to help restore power.

As the storm approaches, residents are advised to stay safe and follow evacuation orders. With the largest mobilization of utility workers in Tampa Electric’s history, the company is committed to restoring power as quickly and safely as possible.
